(March 2022) … Below we get into the nitty-gritty of the Chianti Classico Anteprima tasting held in March of 2022 (one month later than usual). I give my scores for a variety of wines tried, but also I provide some interesting notes and random thoughts from the press releases given to us (these have been edited for conciseness) …
This year, with slower service (as the event was testing a new app-based request system) and other Co-Vid protocols, I tasted some 247 wines (down a little from previous years) … though I tasted most of the Riservas and all the Gran Seleziones:

Grape breakdown for Tuscany; Sangiovese continues to be “King” - Sangiovese is among the top vines, occupying over 60% of cultivated areas (36,000 hectares), Merlot is next (4834 hectares), Cabernet Sauvignon (3766 hectares), then we get into the indigenous varieties: Trebbiano Toscano (2344 hec), Canaiolo (1160 hec) and Vernaccia di San Gimignano (810 hex).

Chianti Classico is about to get complicated, but for good reason, they are sub-dividing into new Geographical Units (aka: UGA). The additional Geographical Units initiative represents an important landmark on the path to a greater appreciation of the unique characteristics of Chianti Classico. The designation will be shown on the wine labels, but limited to the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines in the first phase.
11 areas within the Chianti Classico production zone have been identified and demarcated. Each one is distinguished by a combination of unique natural attributes (soil composition, microclimate, position of the vines, etc.) and human factors (cultural background, local traditions, community ethos). The subdivisions are as follows: San Casciano, Greve, Lamole, Montefioralle, Panzano, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Vagliagli, Castellina, San Donato in Poggio.
Its key aims:
1) reinforcing communication around the correlation between wine and place of origin
2) improving quality levels based on identity and provenance
3) facilitating better consumer understanding of grape sources and stimulating demand by diversifying the offering.
Seeing the names of the Geographical Units printed on the label will both attract and satisfy the curiosity of the consumer, especially those who want to deepen their understanding of the relationship between Chianti Classico wines and their place of origin.

The USA continues to be the top market for Chianti Classico, accounting for one in 3 bottles (33% of total sales), they have held this position for more than 15 years. In a stable second place is the domestic market accounting for 20% of total Chianti Classico sales. “Canada has become a rewarding market in recent years and is now in third place with 10% of sales.”
