Taste it Again: Pinot Noir & Chardonnay

24 Apr 2015

(January 23, 2015) ... Tonight I went to Burgundy by way of Ontario.  Kicked things off with a bottle of Chateau des Charmes 2010 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay. I say I'm not a Chardonnay fan, but it turns out I'm a fan of Ontario's hot vintage Chardonnays because they manage to keep their acidity while still exuding a lot of fruit.  The nose here was quite shy and a little closed giving absolutely nothing away as to what one would expect to find on the palate. Taste-wise it's a different story showing some nice butteriness along with some almond/pecan notes, baked apple and a little praline caramel on the finish.  Palate outperformed the nose, but the taste was well worth the nasal-intrigue.

The other side of the Burgundy-by-way-of-Ontario coin was satisfied by a Rosewood 2010 Pinot Noir Reserve.  Being a hot vintage I was not totally sure what to expect from a Pinot with some age on it, but what I got was quite intriguing.  Aromas held little in the way of fruit, besides a minimum of sour black cherry, the majority of the smells were taken up by licorice and coffee. The palate proved to be much more expressive from the initial peppery nature of the wine to the decent acidity that cradled the coffee bean notes along with, hints of raspberry and cranberry, along with a noticeable baked cassis note ... Quite fragrant on the nose and interesting on the palate - not sure how much longer you'll wanna keep this wine, but I'd say you have 2-3 years easily.
